The Manchester United Game With Seattle Spurs
No Comments

This morning, I google mapped the route to the bar that the Seattle Spurs Supporters Club Chairperson told me about (yes, the Seattle Spur Supporters Club has a chairperson). I could have taken a Lyft or something but I wanted to check out the city on the way to seeing the game. I walked by Green Lake on the way to The Whit’s End in Phinney Ridge (again, I’m talking like I know the neighborhoods of this city). Today was the kind of Seattle summer day that I heard about, i.e. it was sunny.

I showed up to the bar a little before noon. There were a few people already there waiting for the game. The place was small and all of the TV’s were tuned in to the Spurs game (to be fair, there’s nothing else on on a Monday at noon).

When I sat down, a British guy next to me asked what I thought the result would be (pretty cool that I just happened to meet a guy in Seattle who happened to be at the last Spurs game). I wasn’t hopeful. Manchester United always beats us when they’re at home and they were coming off a loss against a team they shouldn’t have lost to. The first half made it seem like we were going to lose. Man U squandered their strong chances and we just couldn’t get past their defense.

In the meantime, the chairperson I emailed showed up and he had Seattle Spurs scarves. I bought one. I chatted with a few people. I ordered some food (this bar’s specialty seemed to be tater tots, which is admirable).

The second half was amazing. Harry Kane scored off of a corner. Lucas Moura scored twice. He seemed like he could have been a bust last year but he’s already scored three times in three games this year.

Winning at Old Trafford is not easy. I think we’ve only done it twice before in the last twenty-five years or so. But we did it today and the story was all Man U and Jose Mourinho, as it always will be. Not how great Spurs are this season but how disappointing Man U is. So it goes.

After the game, I meandered home and checked out more of Seattle. It was clear day and I could see the mountains in the distance. It’s my second day here and I’m a fan.
