15 Thoughts on Game Night (The Movie)

More people should see The ‘Burbs. It stars Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, and Bruce Dern and it cracked me up when I saw it. It was a box office failure directed by Joe Dante who had directed Gremlins and Innerspace. It was the story of when suburban people go too far. It was filled with cul-de-sacs and weird neighbors and friends. Game Night reminded me of it. Just me?

I thought Game Night would be like We’re The Millers or something. Yeah, it’s a passable big budget Hollywood movie and I’ll watch a bit or two when it’s rerun on Comedy Central but it’s not my favorite comedy. Game Night was the first major studio comedy that I’ve seen in many years that has made me laugh this much. I know that makes me sound pompous but before the movie there was a trailer for a movie called Cock Blockers where John Cena butt chugs alcohol. He then expels the alcohol from his butt into Ike Barinholtz’s face. So I think I have a point.

There was a slight hint of the Risky Business soundtrack here too. Just me?

Why did Jeffrey Wright take such a small part in this?

I did the same stand-up rooms with Chelsea Peretti back in the day. Now she’s on Brooklyn 99, has stand-up special, and did a funny bit part in this movie in which she was pregnant with Jordan Peele’s baby. So, basically, our lives and careers are pretty similar since back in the day.

Why did Michael C. Hall take such a small part in this?

I love Lamorne Morris. I always thought they gave him crap storylines on New Girl but, man, that’s what he does. It’s perfectly fine to be a one trick pony when it’s a hell of a great trick.

The Denzel sequence was so great.

Successful brother being kidnapped, kind of like Marathon Man, right? Just me?

If this movie were only the scenes with Jesse Plemmons it still would have been worth the price of the ticket.

Speaking of Friday Night Lights actors, Kyle Chandler (coach Taylor) is a great actor capable of playing one of the most admired characters on television in recent memory, or degenerates (see also: The Spectacular Now).

Jason Bateman is just so Jason Bateman in every movie. That’s either a good thing or a bad thing depending on, you know, how you feel about Jason Bateman. (This observation is deceptively deep and insightful.)

I loved the actions scenes in this movie. That Faberge Egg through the house scene was kind of like an MC Escher drawing. Just me?

This movie is directed by John Francis Daley who was Sam Weir in Freaks and Geeks. (He also played the trivia host in the first five minutes of the movie.) He made a really funny movie and did it while leaving the Apatow universe behind. So it didn’t feature tedious improv joke riffs and pretty much the exact same cast as every other movie that has come out in the past ten years.

Has Rachel McAdams ever been bad in anything? That’s not rhetorical, if you think she’s been bad in anything, comment, thanks!
